St. James' Church - Leckhampstead

This comprehensive restoration project combined specialist conservation techniques with carefully integrated modern upgrades.

The entire roof was insulated using wood fibre board to improve thermal performance while maintaining breathability, and re-tiled with handmade Tudor clay tiles to preserve the building’s historic character. New lead flashings were installed around the tower, traditional bat tiles were incorporated into the roof, and sections of rotten oak rafters were carefully repaired to retain as much original timber as possible. We also carried out detailed restoration works to the stained glass windows.

Internally, all ceiling panels were lime plastered and finished with breathable clay paint, in keeping with the building’s traditional construction. A new lighting system was installed to enhance the space while remaining sympathetic to its architectural features.

To improve comfort and accessibility, underfloor heating was installed within the nave and south aisle, and the floor was relaid using traditional quarry tiles. The project also included the addition of a new accessible WC, a small servery kitchen, and connection to the main drainage system — ensuring the building is both functional and future-ready while respecting its heritage.
