St. Andrew's Church - Boxford

This major tower restoration project required extensive structural expertise and a deep understanding of traditional construction methods.

We erected full scaffolding with a temporary weatherproof covering to protect the church tower throughout the works. The entire historic oak roof structure was carefully dismantled to allow the removal of primary and secondary oak beams that had become structurally unsound. Following detailed inspection, significant decay was identified, and new English green oak beams and rafters were responsibly sourced from specialist timber suppliers.

Our skilled carpenters reconstructed the roof using traditional mortice and tenon joints, faithfully replicating the original craftsmanship and structural design.

The project also included the formation of two new box gutters and drainage sumps, with new sarking boards laid across the entire structure to ensure durability and effective water management. A new access hatch was installed to facilitate the safe removal of the church bells, and new louvres were fitted to improve ventilation.

Externally, the tower crenellations were carefully rebuilt, incorporating 28 new coping stones to restore the architectural integrity of the structure. The lead roof and box gutters were relaid using Code 7 lead sheet, complete with new traditional cast iron hoppers and rectangular downpipes, providing a robust and historically appropriate finish.
