St Margaret's Church - Oxford

JG Restorations were appointed to deliver a comprehensive programme of renovation and improvement works at St Margaret’s Church, Oxford, carefully balancing the preservation of historic character with the introduction of modern facilities and enhanced usability.

A major aspect of the project involved upgrading the church’s flooring and heating systems. The existing marble flooring within the nave and aisles was carefully lifted and retained in the form of walkways, while new underfloor heating was installed beneath bespoke oak herringbone parquet flooring. This was complemented by trench heaters, cast iron radiators, and hot-air blowers, all integrated with the existing gas boiler system to provide efficient and flexible heating throughout the building.

Significant internal alterations were undertaken to improve functionality and support the church’s day-to-day use. A new kitchen and servery area was designed and constructed by our skilled joinery team, featuring high-quality bespoke craftsmanship. In addition, a dedicated floristry preparation room was created to support the church’s floral displays, designed to complement the kitchen and enhanced with a hand-carved cornice.

Storage solutions were sensitively incorporated along both aisles through the installation of handmade oak cupboards, some of which were fitted with brass grilles to discreetly house heating panels. Three new toilet facilities were also introduced, including a fully compliant DDA-accessible unit, improving accessibility for all visitors.

A new gallery space was constructed, featuring an oak front and accessed via a purpose-built oak staircase with wrought-iron spindles. Enhancements to the main entrance included the creation of a new Bath stone entrance area, complete with a wheelchair-accessible ramp and an elegant sweeping handrail with wrought-iron detailing. Two new oak doors and frames were installed, alongside a wheelchair-friendly access apron, ensuring both practicality and visual harmony with the historic setting.

Sustainability was also a key consideration, with the installation of a 7,500-litre rainwater harvesting tank to supply water for the toilets and future irrigation needs.

Externally, the north aisle lead roof was replaced early in the programme, securing the building envelope and protecting the structure for the long term.
