St. Swithun's Church - Headbourne Worthy

Project type

Church renovation, roofing

Date

July 2024 - February 2025

Location

Hedbourne Worthy, Hampshire

JG Restorations undertook the complete re-roofing of the chancel, retiling with handmade Tudor clay tiles laid over traditional Type 1F bat-friendly roofing felt to ensure both heritage integrity and ecological compliance.

Following concerns raised by the inspecting architect, scaffolding was erected to allow a full structural investigation. The roof was found to be in a precarious condition, and a comprehensive programme of works was required. Once stripped, the existing oak timbers were revealed to be extensively deteriorated, necessitating the full reconstruction of the roof structure in green oak using traditional carpentry techniques. Similar structural repairs were carried out to the tower.

As part of the restoration, new stone crosses were individually carved and reinstated at the roof apexes, restoring key architectural features. We also formed a new lead gutter between the nave and tower and installed traditional cast iron rainwater goods to ensure effective drainage and a historically appropriate finish.

This project highlights our expertise in complex heritage roofing works, combining structural precision, traditional craftsmanship, and respect for the building’s original character.
